Ash scattering service in Ireland

Scattering the ashes of a loved one is a very personal, emotional and private event. It can help to understand the rules and regulations around doing this in both private and public spaces.

Human ashes don’t provide a health hazard to the living or to the environment. The remains are essentially powdered fragments of the deceased person’s bones. All metal and other elements are removed before being given to the family.

It’s good to note that many mountaineering societies request that human ash isn’t scattered on high hills and mountainsides as the remains have been shown to have a negative impact on alpine plants. The ash covers delicate foliage and can sometimes destroy the plant.

It quickly becomes apparent that there are contradictions and differences between countries and societies when it comes to scattering the ash of a deceased loved one.

Here are some common rules that countries like Ireland, the UK, Canada, Australia, and the USA all share:

You can scatter ashes on property that you own without any permission.

If the space is privately owned, you’ll need to get permission from the owner.

In the UK, local authority-owned space can require permission. Many decide to go ahead and scatter or bury ashes without permission. Be aware that can create issues with some vigilant park wardens. It could potentially ruin a sacred moment if someone in a high-vis vest picks a fight with you about the ‘rules’.

Some Botanic Gardens (such as Kew Gardens in London) allow ash scattering once you seek permission.

Scattering ashes on a waterway is permissible unless it is an owned stream, river or lake where you should ask the owner for permission.

If the ceremony takes place from a pier, you are requested to ask permission from the Harbourmaster.

Scattering ashes at sea doesn’t require permission. However, an exception is California in the US specifically prefers if the ashes are scattered at least 500 yards off the coast.

If you’d like to scatter ashes on a family grave you should know that some cemeteries don’t allow this. Some cemeteries also charge fees for interment (or burial) of urns containing ashes into a grave.

If you want to transport ashes to another world-wide location:

Most airlines and shipping companies require ashes to be contained in non-metallic containers.

You’ll also need a statement from the crematorium identifying that these are the remains for your deceased loved one.

There are exceptions to the above. For example, Qantas doesn’t require any specific containers or certificates for ashes flown out of Australia.

Be aware that remains will be screened through security as any object going on a plane.

If you would like to transport ashes into other countries it is best to contact the relevant consulate authorities.

Scattering ashes in US National Parks is allowed but it needs to take place away from other people and 90 meters away from water.

Amusement parks like Disney World prohibit ash scattering of any kind.

Ash scattering is facilitated by many ferry and cruise companies like P&O and Carnival Cruises. They frequently assist families with memorials and can facilitate services. Each company has different ways of approaching this but can usually provide the family with a private space on board to conduct a ceremony. Materials dispersed from the ship must all be biodegradable.
Be aware of prevailing wind when scattering or casting out the ashes. Make sure that you know the direction of travel is the one that you want. This segment if compliments of the wonderful Website https://aftering.com

This is a gift. Will the amount I paid be included with the card tribute?

No pricing information will be included.

Can I purchase more than one planting certificate on one order?

Yes, as long as the certificates will all be mailed to the same address. If the certificates are to go to separate addresses, let us know and, if reasonable, there will be no extra charge.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes, the Personalized certificate for your tree gift can be sent anywhere in the world, along with the handwritten, handmade Irish sympathy card.

Please make sure the international address is complete and accurate when entered into the order form.

There is NO extra charge to mail the Certificate and Card internationally.

Of course, our digital Planting Certificate is also emailed within 24 hours of the order being received. Let us know if you would like the digital Certificate emailed to somebody other than, or as well as, yourself. You can do this in the ‘Order notes’ when checking out.

Will my tree be marked with a personal plaque?

If requested we can GeoTag the Tree and share that to provide the specific location. We do not physically tag Trees as we are creating natural woodland (we don’t even plant the trees in straight lines) and placing plaques or tags on trees would not fit with a natural woodland setting and would also complicate the maintenance around the Trees.

Can I specify what type of tree I want planted?

The types of trees planted are listed and can be selected on the website. All the tree types are native Irish Trees. The location and good conditions of our tree planting are suitable for the 8 species offered. These are considered as the best trees to plant in order to achieve the project’s goals. Silviculturists (scientists who study how to grow trees) decide on the type of tree that will grow best and the best time of year to plant them. The objectives for planting these trees include the reintroduction of tree species that were originally in this particular ecosystem and will improve the resilience and resistance to fire, insects, diseases, and the potential effects of climate change.

Can I virtually visit my tree?

Yes! Google Earth allows one to view the general area of the Irish tree planting site using a personal computer, tablet, or mobile phone. Instructions for obtaining the map links are provided with the certificate package.

When will my tree be planted?

Your tree will be planted at the best suitable planting time for tree species, which is typically November – May. Therefore, depending on when your tree was purchased, there could be a gap of time until it is actually planted, but the Planting Certificate and Sympathy card will be issued within 24 hours. This is being done to ensure the best start for every tree and the long-term survival of the trees. Tree planting in summer can be done but the root systems can find it harder to establish themselves as the ground is dryer and therefore harder. Disturbing a tree in the main growth season can impact on its health and survival.

Can I visit my tree?

Private visits can be arranged by appointment.

Generally, we try to meet families on Saturday mornings and this can be arranged. Get in touch by phone or email.

We would ask that a maximum of 8 people visit and that you give a week or two notice to make sure we are about and have slots for the particular weekend you have in mind.

Our memorial trees are planted in a particular area of the woodland.

We plant trees in memory and in celebration. If you have an occasion in mind that you cannot find here on our website, please reach out and get in touch.

We plant trees in an area where human traffic is close to zero, other than planting and woodland maintenance. This is so that trees have a better chance to take root and prosper, yielding a greater benefit to all.

Our Rationale explained. The Trees are planted on Lakeside land on a working farm. We would love it to be an open park or amenity, but all visits need to be by appointment and guided.

Why only by appointment?

Our simple philosophy is to create a native and natural woodland, leave the trees to grow undisturbed, as much as possible, but we plant, stake, water, weed, and feed as they establish.

We also plant flowering bulbs and wildflowers. The trees and land are set aside forever and never harvested.

Our proposition is to provide people with an affordable, thoughtful gesture that is significantly more enduring than just a card of flowers while contributing to the environment.

To offer an open park/woodland the pricing would need to then reflect the costs associated with Public Liability Insurance (and for that a full-time attendant), Local authority Rates, hard paths, car parks, toilet blocks etc. You can probably imagine, these considerations would significantly increase what we would need to price per tree, and that would make our proposition unaffordable for too many.

We are regularly, if not daily, contacted by recipients of Tree Planting Certificates, who deeply appreciate what has been arranged for them, particularly the thoughtfulness of the act, and they contact us to reaffirm what we do and that it does make a difference..

We do hope you understand our rationale ( ie. we are not being awkward) and hope we have given you enough information to help you make a decision.

How much does shipping cost?

Shipping is included.

How long does it take for the Certificate to issued?

If ordered before noon (Irish time), the Planting Certificate will issue the same day, or the next business day if ordered in the afternoon.

Can I return a gift?

Sorry, unless there is a defect or mistake on our part, the gift cannot be returned. Please make sure to check the personalization on the certificate for accuracy before submitting it.

Why should I plant a memorial tree or remembrance tree?

A memorial tree or a remembrance tree is a lasting, physical tribute to the life of a loved one. Planting a tree in memory of someone is a beautiful and poignant means of honouring and preserving their legacy. Many people describe it as a very healing and cathartic experience.

You can donate a tree for other reasons as well. You can plant a remembrance tree to honour the memory of a pet that has passed. You can plant a memorial tree to commemorate a special event, such as a wedding, birth or anniversary, or to mark a significant time or period in a person’s life.

What are the environmental benefits of planting a memorial tree?

There are several environmental benefits to memorial trees, or planting trees in general. Trees help reverse the effects of climate change. They replace carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases with pure oxygen and help keep our air clean. Planting trees helps to prevent flooding and reduce soil erosion. Trees protect wildlife, providing them with food and shelter.

Every time you plant a tree you help maintain and strengthen our ecosystems and biodiversity. Planting a tree in memory of someone also helps contribute to the future and health of our planet. If you would like to learn more about the environmental benefits of planting trees, please click here.

How do I know what to write in a sympathy card or condolence message?

It is always very difficult to write a sympathy card or condolence message. However, we can offer some simple tips and advice to help make it a bit easier for you.

It is best to keep sympathy messages relatively short and simple. This can help ensure that your message seems heartfelt and honest. Your condolence message doesn’t have to be grammatically perfect or particularly poetic, as long as it is sincere and genuine. Don’t spend too long trying to get the words exactly right.

It can be helpful to share your own experiences with grief as this can demonstrate empathy as well as sympathy. If you knew the deceased personally, you can share fond memories of them. Illustrate how they made a positive impact on you, express gratitude for having known them and highlight their good qualities. Finally, try to avoid the use of cliches and platitudes so you don’t appear insincere or uncaring.

How do I make sense of my grief or the grief of a loved one?

The grieving process is a perfectly normal and natural response to a loss. Grieving is a deeply intimate and individualised experience for us all. Everyone mourns differently and there is really no wrong or right way to grieve.

If you would like to learn more about grief, please click here. This article can give a deeper insight into the grieving process. It can also inform you on the theory of the stages of grief. While this should not be used as a guide or manual for your own grief, it can help give your grieving process some clarity and context. Recognising and identifying the complex or confusing emotions you may be feeling can be the first step to resolving them.
